TALK : Harmonizing Classical and Quantum Mechanics
A semi-classical approach to quantum systems

  1. Abstract

Classical and quantum mechanics: so united in purpose, yet worlds apart in their formalism. While position-momentum phase space, poison brackets and Hamilton’s equations reign the realm of classical mechanics, the quantum domain is governed by Hilbert spaces, hermitian operators and Schrodinger equation. Initial attempts to bridge the gap are quickly thwarted by Heisenberg and his uncertainty principle, but let’s not give up just yet. In the talk, I will try to define the quantum counterparts of elements of classical mechanics using the language of Wigner-Weyl transform. I’ll aim to establish a robust semi-classical approach to quantum mechanics — one that isn’t just an approximation, but is actually exact! Along the way, expect some fun examples, fewer headaches, and a bit more harmony in the universe—or at least in our equations!

PROJECT : Nonlinear Dynamics

  1. Abstract

In this project, we will discuss the basics of nonlinear dynamics and will dive into the study of a nonlinear system - a population growth model involving different population interactions. Nonlinear dynamics involves the study of systems that are governed by equations that are not of the linear form - such as population dynamics, double pendulum, weather dynamics and fluid dynamics. We will begin our study with an analysis of first-order and linear systems, introducing the notion of fixed points and their stability and bifurcations and its different types. We will look into a few numerical methods to solve these systems and phase plane analysis. We will conclude by analyzing a second-order nonlinear system of two populations interacting with each other.

PROJECT : Google PageRank Algorithm

  1. Abstract

The Google PageRank algorithm is a cornerstone of modern web search engines, providing a mechanism to rank web pages based on their link structure. This project explores the mathe- matical foundation of the algorithm, modeling the internet as a directed graph and employing concepts such as probability vectors and stochastic matrices. An iterative scheme is utilized to compute the PageRank vector, representing the steady-state distribution of web page ranks. The computational challenges of convergence and the scalability of the algorithm are addressed. A modification, the Random Surfer Algorithm, is also discussed, which simulates a user randomly clicking links and resolves issues like dead ends in the hyperlink matrix. Implementation re- sults using Python demonstrate the evolution and convergence of page ranks. The theoretical underpinnings, including the Perron-Frobenius theorem and eigenvector analysis, are validated through numerical experiments, showcasing the robustness and adaptability of the algorithm in handling complex web networks.

PROJECT : The Splitwise Problem

  1. Abstract

One evening, out of sheer boredom, I started pondering how the famous application Splitwise works. The concept is straightforward: you and your friends make numerous payments for each other, and at the end of the day, you want to settle all debts. What is the minimum number of transactions required to achieve this? Check out the report to find the answer.
